Any time we drive between Palm Springs and Las Vegas, we pass Roy’s Motel and Café on historic Route 66 in Amboy, California—a haunting icon of mid-century Americana. Set against the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert, Roy’s stands like a time capsule from the golden age of road travel, its bold neon sign and weathered buildings evoking the heyday of the Mother Road. Roy’s is a living monument to America’s romance with the open road.
After 2-3 days of clouds and intermittent rain, the sky is clear, and the mighty San Jacinto Mountains are covered with snow. I took this photo today from the Chuckwalla Trail, which starts in Rancho Mirage. The community at the base of the mountains is the Cathedral City Cove. Another gorgeous day in Southern California!
Bike riding is an excellent way to get out and see what’s happening around the Coachella Valley. E-bikes make it easier to cover a lot more ground. It’s great exercise and the views are spectacular!
These large, fragrant, white flowers popped up last night on the San Pedro cactus in our backyard, unfortunately, they’ll only last a day or two. Hummingbirds & bees are enjoying them.
This intimidating rattlesnake was next to the trail today at Mission Creek Preserve. It’s not uncommon to see a snake while hiking, but it’s always a thrill.
